A Cool, Dry Place is sort of a rehash of the classic Dustin Hoffmann/Mery Streep starrer Kramer vs Kramer. But if Kramer was a huge success both critically and commercially, itong A Cool Dry Place daw was the opposite. Hindi masyadong nagustuhan ng critics. Plus, it was released briefly in theaters but because of poor returns at the box office, went straight into video.
Sayang naman coz the movie wasn’t that bad. In fact, it was one of the most touching family drama I’ve seen. Released in ’98-’99, it stars a younger Vince Vaughn (na kamukha ng isang ka-adik kong si Matt), as the father, Monica Potter as the prodigal wife and Bobby Moat as the endearing little kid in the middle of the whole conflict. Parehong-pareho nga ang story with Kramer, it deals with a young family where the wife suddenly leaves her husband, for no apparent reason, obviously nagluka-lukahan lang. Naiwan ang husband at ang small boy to fend for themselves.
Daddy plowed ahead and made his best efforts to give his little boy a normal life after the trauma of losing his mother. Daddy also had to make sacrifices, including his career, para maging maayos ang buhay nilang mag-ama. In this film, Russell (Vince) gave up his career as a big city lawyer and relocated to his small town in Kansas.
Tapos kung kelan tahimik na sila at masaya, and Russell started to develop a new love interest in Beth (Joey Lauren Adams), biglang sumulpot na naman ang lokang nanay. Just like Meryl’s character, maiinis ka kay Kate (Monica). Then later on maiintindihan mo rin sya and will also feel for her nong umiyak na sya dahil na-realize nya that no matter what she does, she will never ever get back the child she once abandoned. But that’s jumping ahead of the story.
Ang pinaka-sentro nong story is the bond between the father and the boy. In fact, the little boy was the soul of the entire film. Bobby Moat was like Justin Henry who played Billy in Kramer. He was cute, charming and very natural as the 5-year old Carl who made me want to protect and care for him just like what his father Russell was doing.
Although there was a part where Kate kidnapped her own kid, Russell was torn between letting go and going after the kid. May isang job opportunity sa Chicago, a dream job for him, na tinanggap na nya. But it means leaving the life they have already built in that small town, also the possibility of giving up his little boy.
Melodramatic ang ending noong pelikula and it almost made me cry. Kainis nga kasi it’s weird to get emotional late at night and when you’re just about to sleep. Pero kahit napuyat ako, the film is all worth the antok na dadanasin ko today.
The movie is all about love, relationships and getting sidetracked by temptations. His friend’s Camaro was wrecked, binangga ng misis (nong friend nya). Sabi ni Russell, siguro dahil may dine-date kang batang waitress. Sumagot yong friend: “I thought (the wife) was all I’d ever have in my life. Then (the young waitress) came along. I guess I’m just lucky I met two in my lifetime.” Tipikal na linya ng mga babaero?
I hope husbands and wife will watch these kind of films and realize how important it is to keep your family intact. So if you’re a family man, give it your best shot to keep your family tightly knitted. You’re supposed to be the moral backbone of your family. Stand up and do your part.
