ShoutOUT! First Takes for the month of March

First Take Playlist for the month Of March

Screening Schedule:

KNOCKOUT / JEANETTE LIM / 6 MIN / 2010 / PG

In a time not to far from the future, virtual reality will no longer be just a dream. But for a few select individuals out there, their world has already made the jump to the matrix. Why trundle and trudge along with the daily grind of life, when an alternative reality exists out there, in its glorious high-definition and saturated colours? Plug in. Knock yourself out.

Jeanette Lim is a 21-year old aspiring filmmaker. Currently majoring in Broadcast and Cinema studies at Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University, she has directed and been involved in the production of several student films.

STORIES / JAMES HO / 16 MIN / 2010 / PG

Ah Gong (Grandfather) is new to the family and dislikes his grandson, Jim, so he decides to bridge the gap with imaginative, and ficticious, stories of his heroics. Jim is drawn in by the stories but learns that Ah Gong is not what he portrays himself to be. Ah Gong must then earn back the trust of his grandson.

A Ngee Ann Polytechnic graduate with a Diploma in Film, Sound & Video, James likes to attempt things out of the ordinary such as, turning a library into a disco in RingTone (2009) or filming a paper boat floating out to sea in Paperboat (2009). More recently, James embarked on a film called Stories (2010), where he integrates elements of a samurai, gangster, hero and even a hamster into the film. He is now currently in the process of conceptualizing another unique short film.

PAST TIMES / JUSTIN HUI / 9 MIN / 2010 / PG

Longkangs (drains), kites and spiders? A pair of modern day brothers, Kor and Boy, compete in a series of childhood games and realise that the past is worth remembering.

Justin, a second year student at National University of Singapore, is a storyteller with a passion for art and film. He has worked on a string of films ranging from short narratives to foreign documentaries.

SUMMER AND ITS RAIN / JOSHUA SIMON / 10 MIN / 2010 / PG

In a world that has lost its colour, a young woman uses music to restore vibrancy to her life.

Joshua recently graduated from the Film, Sound and Video course at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. His film, 25th of Laura, was a finalist at the 2010 Singapore International Film Festival.

ShoutOUT!:Substation Presents "HUMAN FRAMES"

The Substation and Lowave are proud to present Human Frames, happening from 17th to 20th February 2011 at The Substation theatre.

Human Frames (http://www.human-frames.com/) presents a series of ten film programmes examining the human condition through experimental film and video art. Comprising both contemporary and archive images from across Asia and Europe, this project is inspired by the ancient theory of humoralism as a framework for analysing certain aspects of the human character.

Focusing on ten emotional states – melancholy, fear, anger, fanaticism, isolation, madness, desire, impermanence and mono no aware – Human Frames depicts the timeless and universal panoply of human tempers that lay beyond national, social and cultural affiliations. Working with artists and curators from both Asia and Europe, Human Frames spans disparate practices and processes and charts ideological convergences and divergences alike.

Films and artworks are selected by independent guest curators, such as Adam Pugh (UK), Masayo Kajimura (Germany/Japan), Victric Thng (Singapore) and artistic consultant François Michaud (France). This event is presented by Lowave (France), co-presented by The Substation Moving Images and Supported by the Asia-Europe Foundation, Singapore.

Human Frames is presented by Silke Schmickl and Stéphane Gérard from Lowave in Paris. Lowave is an independent film label founded in 2002 to promote experimental film and contemporary video art and make them accessible beyond the film festival and gallery circuit. They will both be present during this period for post screening discussions.

ShoutOUT!: FIRST TAKE IS BACK!

After a month of hiatus,
SUBSTATION'S FIRST TAKE IS BACK!
And here's the playlist for FEBRUARY FIRST TAKES

First on the list is
CANDID SHOTS OF YOUTH AT PLAY / ATHALIA HO / 5 MIN / 2010 / PG

Two boys bring a dead body to an open field. Its disposal does nothing to remove the memory of its existence and its ceasing. A poetic film about young men and their own inability to deal with their consciences, their anxiety towards the world, and their loss of innocence.

Athalia Ho graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Film and Media Studies with a Diploma in Film, Sound and Video in 2008. She had consistently been making films with her cellphone—films that have never been and never will be released—before finally deciding to commit this style of filmmaking to a proper form with her short film, Candid Shots of Youth at Play.

BACKYARD BOWLER / AMANDA TAN / 12 MIN / 2009 / PG

Backyard Bowler is the story of a man, Tim, reminiscing about his life in his final moments as lung cancer debilitates him. We experience his trials, mistakes and somewhat self-constructed predicaments as he struggles to keep afloat.

Amanda Tan graduated from the School of Art, Design and Media at the Nanyang Technological University with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. Her work has been screened at festivals such as the Singapore Short Film Festival and the 2009 Salento International Film Festival in Italy.

A GREEN TICKET / S ANOOPRIYA / 8 MIN / 2010 / PG

A coming of age story about ten year old Ming and the choice he has to make of how to spend his savings.

S Anoopriya is a graduate from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts with a Diploma in Design and Media. She has written and directed several shorts in school.

YOU DISAPPEAR / HAKYM NOH / 8 MIN / 2010 / PG

Her loved ones have died tragically, the shock and grief makes her retreat from reality. In her mind, this harrowing event never took place and instead, she hopes to seek happiness. She escapes into a world that exists in her imagination and finds her way towards her own disappearance. Beyond the dreams and fantasies, the film depicts a world of alternative existence, reflecting the overwhelming confusion and grief that leads to her eventual release.

Hakym Noh was born in 1992 in Singapore. He has completed five shorts so far, and also dabbled in photography. You Disappear is his most recent short.

I MAKE T-SHIRTS / STEPHANIE BOUSLEY / 10 MIN / 2010 / PG

Rick Shamus writes (what he thinks are) hilarious t-shirts.

Stephanie is in her final year of Masters of coursework at NYU School of the Arts Asia. She likes making funny, weird, low budget films.

SQUARE SHAPED / ZEN / 6 MIN / 2009 / PG

Adam is a very organised person and felt that there was nothing wrong with his obsession; until his new secretary came along, disrupting his structure of life. He tried making adjustments but later understood that what was missing in his life was not the structure, but human touch.

This is Zen’s first film.

MOUTHEAD / MICHELLE CHEONG / 3 MIN / 2010 / PG

This short is about is dinner date which goes horribly wrong…

Michelle Cheong is currently pursuing a degree in fine arts at NTU, School of Arts, Design and Media, majoring in film. Her upcoming project is her thesis final-year project entitled Pixel.
